Artist Biography Highlights
Kat Manton-Jones is a watercolor artist and creator of personal illustrated journals. She is self-taught and takes an experimental approach to painting and is intrigued with how a subject can be portrayed in a variety of media and styles. She is a Saguaro Fellow in the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild; a member of Women in Watercolor and Tubac Center for the Arts.

She was a 2023 Arquetopia Artist-in-Residence in Urubamba Peru. This Residency focused on process over product and fostered expansion of concept development and creative technique. In addition to painting, she is an avid hiker and backpacker and completed the 800-mile Arizona National Scenic Trail. She describes her hikes and travels in an illustrated journal dubbed “The Katlas.”

Artist Statement
I have been painting since 2000. I’ve gained valuable knowledge through workshops, classes, books, videos, experimentation, and practice. I begin planning a painting by drawing a loose sketch enjoying the spontaneity of line. I make a small value sketch and transfer the line drawing to paper or Yupo. Generally, I choose a limited palette of three to five colors. When painting on Yupo, I always start with pouring paint and creating texture. Once that dries, I look for a theme, wipe out sections, pour more paint, and add details. When creating a pen and ink painting, I paint first, erase the pencil lines, and add ink lines at the end to add texture and interest. Experimentation is what makes painting fun and I play with new color combinations, textures, or techniques to keep it fresh and expand my skills. As a result, my art is continually evolving.
