Artist Statement
My lifelong interest in the arts became intensified following the loss of my older son in 1999. After completing a simple exercise of intuitive drawing with charcoal, I discovered the amazing healing power of art. The experience sparked something deep inside me, spiritually, and my journey to become an artist began.
I work with a variety of mediums, usually keeping my color palette quite limited. My paintings can be quite textural and I enjoy incorporating bold lines to accentuate each piece. When I approach a new painting, I began by simply playing with acrylic, charcoal or graphite powders and sticks, brushes, rollers, scrapers, alcohol spray, collage and other textures and mediums. Once a surface is semi-completed, I let it “rest” to consider what direction to take next, contemplating about what I might see in it; a figure, a landscape, a bird or my favorite; a portrait. For me, this is the most exciting part of painting and drawing, when I free myself from any expectations. Creating a sense of movement and mystery is important to me, but my ultimate goal, as for many artists, is aimed at establishing an emotional connection between my work and the viewer.
Developing my skills, experimenting, and taking risks are important to me as I continue to express myself through my artwork. It’s a journey I’m grateful to be on because creating art has brought such healing and joy to my life. I’m also passionate about encouraging others to embrace their creativity.
